MYCOGEN CORP. RECEIVES CALIFORNIA APPROVAL FOR
 FIRST GENETICALLY ENGINEERED BIOPESTICIDE
SAN DIEGO, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Mycogen Corp. (NASDAQ: MYCO) announced today that the California Environmental Protection Agency has approved MVP(R) bioinsecticide for commercial sale. It is the first genetically engineered biopesticide to be registered for sale in California.
In June 1991, MVP and M-Trak(TM) bioinsecticides, Mycogen's first two products that utilize the company's proprietary CellCap(R) encapsulation system, became the first genetically engineered pesticides to be registered for sale by the U S. Environmental Protection Agency.
MVP is derived from a naturally occurring Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) bacteria that produces a selective toxin that controls caterpillar pests that attack broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, tomatoes, grapes and other crops. The toxin produced by the B.t. bacterium kills insects as they feed on leaves of treated crops, but is nontoxic to beneficial insects, animals and humans, biodegrades rapidly leaving essentially no residue in foods or groundwater, and has no worker re-entry restrictions.
"California approval is significant to Mycogen for several reasons," said Jerry Caulder, Mycogen's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "First, it has been the number one ranking agricultural state in the United States for more than 40 years. In addition, California leads the nation in the production of over 50 crop and livestock commodities, and it produces over 85 percent of the nations grapes, a primary target crop for MVP," added Caulder.
Mycogen uses recombinant DNA techniques to insert the gene that produces the B.t. toxin into another naturally occurring bacterium. After the genetically engineered bacteria are mass produced through fermentation, they are killed with the company's proprietary CellCap encapsulation process, which stabilizes the microbial cell wall to form a protective capsule around the insecticidal protein. The capsules protect the biodegradable toxin from sun and moisture long enough for it to be ingested by target pests.
"Our researchers have identified highly specific, naturally occurring insecticides and we have developed a process to deliver them in products that give farmers effective, economical and environmentally sound pest control," said Caulder.
In commercial field trials throughout the United States in 1990 and 1991, Mycogen scientists and university researchers demonstrated that MVP provides excellent control of various caterpillar insects, which have developed resistance to traditional chemical pesticides. Field data also verified that MVP outperforms non-encapsulated biopesticides.
Mycogen Corp. provides crop protection products and services. The company develops, manufactures and markets environmentally compatible products based on naturally occurring agents to control insects, parasites, weeds and other pests. The company develops its products through the application of genetic engineering technology and innovative formulations.
