MY LITTLE PUSSY'S A BIG HIT; Cheeky Richie is all set for another No1smash.

Byline: JENNY FRIEL

IRELAND'S funniest pop star is at it again - Richie Kavanagh is No 17 in the charts and rising with his latest naughty offering.

The cloth-capped culchie's mischievious new song Pussy-Pussy-Cat has climbed eight places in the Irish singles charts in a week.

One tongue-in-cheek line in the song goes: "Oh me girlfriend has a pussy/A lovely pussy now/An' every time I rubs it/She goes miaow."

Most famous for his 1996 hit Aon Focail Eile, 50-year-old Richie from Garyhill, Co Carlow, said he is thrilled with his latest success.

The comedian and singer said last night: "Sure, I'm amazed at how well it's doing - it's a great bit of fun."

And Richie defended the suggestive lyrics by claiming that his grandson Adam, who's three, loves it and even sings along to all the words.

Richies last hit single caused a right old rumpus.

Aon Focail Eile, which stayed at No1 for eight weeks, was sung by schoolchildren across the country - much to the alarm of parents and teachers.

Pupils used the Irish word Focail so much that parents believed they were swearing in English.

But Richie insisted it is all a bit of fun and it is up to individual listeners how they interpret his songs, adding: "Pussy-Pussy- Cat is about a cat - it's as simple as that.

"I've had no complaints from anybody about the song because it is just meant to make people smile. It's not intended to offend because if you see the video it is very straight up."

Richie revealed he got the idea for his song about a cat from watching late night TV.

He said: "Whenever I get back from doing a gig I'm on a real high so I always watch a bit of television before I go to bed.

"I got into watching that Are You Being Served? show and I got the idea from Mrs Slocombe always going home to wash her pussy. I said to the wife, Nancy, that it could be a great little song - Mrs Slocombe's Pussy - but she said no-one watched it.

"To be honest, I thought it might be a bit too naughty and I spent 18 months messing with it.

"I had a rough version on one of my demos and my grandchildren heard it and they loved it.

"They would wait for the miaow bits and sing along - so you see kids really get it.

"Adults can make up their own minds about it - but I've always been a great one to play with words."

RTE radio presenter Gerry Ryan said last night that he will still play the single despite the suggestive lyrics.

He added: "We would like to think that we were in fact partly responsible for Richie's meteoric rise.

"We were the first to play Aon Focail Eile and we will continue to play his latest number.

"It has already been played on the show and as yet we have not had one complaint.

"And why would there be? It is a great country classic."

Richie expects the single to climb even further up the charts.

He said: "The reaction has been positive. The shops seem to think it's doing very well.

"I might have another No1 hit on my hands."

PUSSY-PUSSY-CAT

Oh me girlfriend has a pussy

A lovely pussy now

An' every time I rubs it

She goes miaow

She has a lovely pussy

I seen it in her house

I did I seen her pussy cat

A gobble up a mouse.

Oh ya thought it was so naughty

But it''s not a naughty song

Ya thought it was so naughty

I was coddin' all along

Pussy Pussy Pussy

Pussy Pussy Cat

Pussy Pussy Pussy

So fluffy and so fat.

T'was late that night when I got home

T'was early in the morning

Me mammy says get into bed

Me boy you should be snoring

What kept ya out me mammy says

Ya know she's awful fussy

Says I sure I was only playing

With me girlfriend''s pussy.

Well me mammy nearly done her nut

Come here you little brat

A chap like you of 32

Them things should not be at

But mammy you should see it

Such a lovely pussy cat

A rubbing up against me

A sitting on the mat

First time I saw her pussy

Twas on a summer day

Her lovely fluffy pussy

A lying in the hay

A do ya like me pussy

It''s the only one I got

Begore I do, I surely do

I like it quite a lot.
