 32nd Annual Computer Security Conference and Exhibition, scheduled for Nov. 14-16, 2005, in Washington, D.C.

Chasin's presentation, "The Evolution of Web Site Spoofing: From Phishing to Pharming pharming (fär`mĭng), the use of genetically altered livestock, such as cows, goats, pigs, and chickens, to produce medically useful products. ," will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 1:45 p.m. ET.

"Pharming is phishing without the lure," Chasin said. "Pharming represents the lack of trust that exists in the address field of any Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. . Crimeware downloaded onto local applications and DNS-cache poisoning techniques can reroute Web addresses to rogue sites and end users have no way of knowing that they have been maliciously redirected."
