MUTTS GET THEIR DUE AT OWN SHOW.

Byline: ALEX DOBUZINSKIS Staff Writer

WOODLAND HILLS - Mutts had the run of Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics
Pierce College offers associate's degrees, mainly in the arts and sciences. There are also certificate programs in early childhood education, social services, dental hygienist, and others.
on Saturday, as thousands of dogs whose ancestry is anything but pedigreed participated in a dog show created just for them.

It was hard to figure out who was more excited to be at the fifth annual Nuts for Mutts - the dogs or their owners.

Mutts ran around on leashes, wagging their tails and taking an occasional cool-down bath in small plastic pools. Humans walking dogs stopped occasionally to declare how cute another pooch was.

Judges rated the dogs in a variety of competitions - from Fastest Eater to Best Kisser.

It was a good day for dogs who often lack the respect given to their purebred purebred

"I love seeing so many rescues in one place; (it) gives me hope," said dog owner Shannon Landon, 36, who volunteers at the Glendale Humane Society A humane society is a group that aims to stop animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons. Examples

Shannon's husband, Michael, wore a T-shirt with the words "My Dog Did Time" as the two sat for a rest with their dogs Kuma and Radar. They got both dogs from the Glendale Humane Society.

Lisa and Brian Valente of Sherman Oaks brought their dog Big, another rescued animal, to the show.

"He's half Irish wolfhound Irish wolfhound, breed of very large hound whose origins may be traced back many centuries in Ireland. The tallest of dogs, it stands about 34 in. (86.4 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs about 140 lb (63.5 kg). Its rough, wiry coat is usually gray in color. , but mostly trouble," said Brian Valente, 39, who works in software.

Clare Cox of Northridge entered her small dog Grace, who is part dachshund dachshund (dăks`hnd, –ənd, dăsh`–), breed of small, short-legged hound developed in Germany over hundreds of years. It stands from 5 to 9 in. , into the Fastest Eater competition. Grace managed to qualify for the next round, and was even hungry enough after finishing one bowl of vittles to start chowing down on another dog's leftovers.

Cox had to pick Grace up when the pooch refused to clear the field of competition.

She'll pull her bag of dog food out of the cupboard and snack on it," Cox said.

Nuts for Mutts was organized by the nonprofit New Leash on Life Animal Rescue and sponsored by Scotch-Brite. The event, which continues today, is a fundraiser for New Leash on Life, which finds loving homes for dogs.

The Newhall-based New Leash on Life had an adoption center in the middle of Saturday's event. Potential "parents" filled out forms in the hopes of getting one of the dozen or so dogs on display.

Organizers expected 10,000 people to participate in Nuts for Mutts over the weekend.
