MUSTANGS SEEK ANOTHER REGIONAL; DESPITE A 16-4-2 RECORD, TEAM MISSED PLAYOFFS.

``So far, they're more cohesive,'' Rickard said of his players. ``They pick up what I want to get across quicker. And they come from a better background.''

Rickard lost defender Spencer Erwin and outside midfielder Joel Murphy (eight goals, nine assists) to graduation. Yet two top recruits, C.J. Larsen and Rusty Brooke, should play key roles.

Larsen, a highly-touted defender from Bakersfield, scrimmaged with the under-17 national team. Brooke, from the Phoenix area, played on the National Youth Soccer Association under-17 national champion team.

``If they don't start, they'll play a lot,'' Rickard said.

Forward Timo Scheunemann graduated, taking his speed and 12 goals and seven assists with him. Rickard brought in Craig Hartley from Jamaica and still has senior Lucas Principe from Argentina. Both grew up playing in soccer-crazed countries.

The Mustangs' one hole is at sweeper, where first team all-region Andrew Williams would be a sophomore if not for academic problems. Rickard hopes returning defender Dan Hensley can make the switch.

The team's one trouble is a lack of depth, with only 18 players. ``If I have a few injuries, I can get myself in trouble,'' Rickard said.
