Byline: Keith Marder Daily News Television Writer

It's the night that networks other than NBC NBC

``ER'' slot before moving over to Saturday night.

You probably could simulcast Uganda's version of C-SPAN in those two slots and it would be a top-20 Nielsen hit.

The only other new show you'll see tonight is ``Moloney,'' starring Peter Strauss, but going up against ``Seinfeld'' and even ``Murder One'' for that matter, it could star your next-door neighbor and you probably wouldn't watch.

9 p.m. Thursdays (KCBS KCBS Kansas City Barbecue Society
KCBS Korea Christian Book Service (now called KCB; Seoul, Korea)
KCBS Kerala Catholic Bible Society (Kerala, India)
, Channel 2)

Premieres: 9 tonight

Starring: Peter Strauss (Nick Moloney), Nestor Serrano (Lt. Matty Navarro), Wendell Pierce Wendell Pierce (b. December 8, 1962, in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American actor.

He is most notable for appearance on the HBO program The Wire as Detective Bunk Moreland. He also played a crooked policeman on Third Watch named Conrad "Candyman" Jones.
 (Calvin Patterson).

Network pitch: A drama about Nick Moloney, a Los Angeles police psychiatrist with an edge. He has kept his badge in order to keep himself in the game, but nowadays he's the guy to whom the department sends its problems.

Translation: He's the guy who should be transferred to New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
to help out Sipowicz, the tortured cop on ``NYPD Blue.''

Alternate title: ``Cop Doc.''

Pros: Strauss is a likable television commodity. ... Changes speed well from family life to professional crisis. ... Different look at the cop drama. ... Witty at times.

Cons: Unbelievable. ... Strauss is a cocky bluff-caller who seems to know it all. ... Annoying kid alert.

Sound bite: Ex-wife: ``For once in your life, do yourself a favor, don't push it.''

Moloney: ``Well, that'll be tough, I'm half Irish.''

Ex-wife: ``You're also half Jewish - what does that half say?''

Moloney: ``That the hole in the ozone was caused by my deodorant deodorant /de·odor·ant/ (de-o´der-int)
1. masking offensive odors.

2. an agent that so acts.

Prognosis: They should have their heads examined for putting this show in this time slot.

SUDDENLY SUSAN

9:30 p.m. Thursdays (KNBC KNBC Kings Norton Bowling Club , Channel 4)

Premieres: 9:30 tonight

Starring: Brooke Shields (Susan Keane), Judd Nelson (Jack Richmond), Barbara Barrie (Nana), Kathy Griffin (Vicki Groener), David Strickland (Todd), Nestor Carbonell (Luis Rivera).

Network pitch: The show focuses on Susan, a beautiful but somewhat sheltered magazine writer who leaves her rich fiance when she realizes she wants more from life.

Translation: Susan is a clone of the Rachel character from ``Friends.'' It's almost like a spinoff without taking the popular character off the other show. What a concept.

Alternate title: ``Suddenly, Rachel.''

Pros: Shields has comic timing. Remember she's not just a model, but was also an honors student at Princeton. Don't you just hate her? ... Nelson also adds comedy, as does Susan's new friend Vicki. ... Best spot on the schedule. ... Laughs at its own Mary Tyler Moore This article is about the actress. For her 1970s television series, also known as "Mary Tyler Moore", see The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Mary Tyler Moore
mirroring at end of first episode.

Cons: Stop the physical comedy; nobody wants to see Shields fall down drunk. ... Too goofy at times. ... This is the third try at a pilot, which is not usually a positive thing. It indicates that the original vision was bad, and they are making it up as they go along.

Sound bite: Mother: ``You were such a happy child.''

Susan: ``I wanna wan·na
Informal

2. Contraction of want a: You wanna slice of pie?
 be a happy grown-up grown-up
adj.
1. Of, characteristic of, or intended for adults: grown-up movies; a grown-up discussion.

2.
.''

Mother: ``Nobody's a happy grown-up.''

Nana: ``That's not true. Sometimes it skips a generation.''

Prognosis: Here is a top-10 Nielsen show, whether it's good or not. Witness ``The Single Guy'' and ``Caroline in the City Caroline in the City is an American sitcom that ran from September 21, 1995, to May 11, 1999, on the NBC television network. Premise

THE PRETENDER

9 p.m. Saturdays (KNBC, Channel 4)

Premieres: 10 tonight

Starring: Michael T. Weiss Michael Terry Weiss (born February 2 1962 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American actor. Biography
Early life
Weiss' father was a steel-industry executive and his mother was a homemaker.
(Jarod Russell), Andrea Parker (Miss Parker), Patrick Bauchau (Sydney Green).

Pitch: An hourlong suspense series starring Michael T. Weiss as Jarod Russell, a genius whose exceptional intelligence allows him to master virtually any profession. He uses his skill to become a one-man, nonviolent vigilante vigilante n. someone who takes the law into his/her own hands by trying and/or punishing another person without any legal authority. In the 1800s groups of vigilantes dispensed "frontier justice" by holding trials of accused horse-thieves, rustlers and shooters, and  force for justice - despite being stalked by agents of a clandestine research complex.

Translation: It's kind of like ``The Fugitive'' and sort of like ``Zelig,'' neither of which is a bad thing.

Alternate title: ``Mensa MENSA. This comprehends all goods and necessaries for livelihood. Obsolete.  Behaving Gladly.''

Pros: Believe it or not, it's believable. ... Good wins out. ... Gets to start in ``ER'' slot.

Cons: May get tiresome. ... Jarod Russell is odd looking. ... One of the bad guys is not that bad. ... On NBC's showcase night, the best show may turn out to be only as good as the worst.

Sound bite: Jarod: ``Now, this is fascinating; they win money by guessing word puzzles.''

Bum: You've never seen `Wheel of Fortune,' what rock you been living under?''

Prognosis: NBC seems to like this show a lot. Entertainment president Warren Littlefield said that he put it in the middle of the night because he had the highest hopes for it out of the three.

Grade: B+
