to mark the Feast of Sacrifice Noun 1. Feast of Sacrifice - the 10th day of Dhu'l-Hijja; all Muslims attend a service in the mosques and those who are not pilgrims perform a ritual slaughter of a sheep (commemorating God's ransom of Abraham's son from sacrifice) and give at least a third of the , the most important feast in the Muslim calendar.

Eid-ul-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim or Abraham to obey God and offer his son as a sacrifice, although his son was ultimately spared.

The feast comes at the time of the hajj hajj (häj), the pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, one of the five basic requirements (arkan or "pillars") of Islam. Its annual observance corresponds to the major holy day id al-adha, , the pilgrimage to Mecca pilgrimage to Mecca

Sheik Tajuddin Shuaib spoke to the congregants Sunday about the unity Muslims show when they make the pilgrimage.

``This is the essence of Islam. We are siblings, brothers and sisters from Adam. We must not allow our common enemy to divide us,'' Shuaib said to the congregants, many of them immigrants from various parts of the Muslim world.

Men and women listened to the sermon from separate sections of the mosque. After the service, the congregants gathered for refreshments, including juice, doughnuts and samboosas, or dough filled with meat.

Besides Eid-ul-Adha, the other major celebratory holiday in the Muslim calendar is Eid-ul-Fitr, which comes at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting.

Marwan Zeidan, 33, of Northridge said Eid-ul-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice is a social occasion.

``Friends get together, visit your family and just take the kids out to do the kid things,'' Zeidan said.

Services were held at mosques throughout the Southland on Sunday. The Islamic Center of Southern California held an Eid-ul-Adha event at the Los Angeles Convention Center The Los Angeles Convention Center (abbreviated LACC) is a convention center in downtown Los Angeles. The LACC hosts annual events such as the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, and was best known to video games fans as host to E3 until its cessation in 2006. . A voter-registration drive was part of the event, as it was at several other places where the holiday was celebrated.

Muslims from countries including Turkey, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria and Morocco attended King Fahd Mosque, and some wore clothing from their native lands for the occasion, noted Usman Madha, director of public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most  for the mosque.

Dress included robes, head coverings for the women and skullcaps and turbans for the men, although many men wore more casual clothes.

Fahad Alqahtani, 26, came from Saudi Arabia to study for his master's degree in computer engineering at the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission . Being from Saudi Arabia, Alqahtani found it easier to complete his pilgrimage to Mecca, which is one of the ``five pillars'' of Islam.

``That's an advantage that we have over other Muslims,'' Alqahtani said. To allow space for Muslims from other parts of the world to make the pilgrimage, however, Saudi Arabians are only allowed to go to Mecca for the hajj once every five years, he said.
