MUSITEK SHIPS MIDISCAN VER. 1.0 -- WORLD'S FIRST MUSIC-READING SOFTWARE

OJAI, Calif., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Musitek of Ojai announces the release of MIDISCAN for Windows, Version 1.0. MIDISCAN is now being shipped to users, dealers and distributors worldwide. It is the world's first automatic music reading software and is designed to quickly and accurately convert printed sheet music into multitrack MIDI files, enabling users to capture and playback complex musical arrangements in minutes. MIDISCAN is equivalent to OCR for music and has been under development for three years (12 Ph.D. man-years).
MIDISCAN recognizes note pitches, note and rest durations, chords, accidentals, ties, bar lines, clefs, key and time signatures with up to 98 percent accuracy. The software can automatically process multiple pages of a musical score and correct skewed images while ignoring non- note objects such as titles, guitar tablature, lyrics and other markings which do not translate into MIDI. MIDISCAN works with all sequencing and notation applications by creating a standard MIDI file for playback and manipulation. It significantly increases user productivity by essentially eliminating manual note-input.
MIDISCAN is the perfect accessory for singers who need an accompaniment of their favorite arrangement in any key. Karaoke fans can make cassettes from MIDI sequences captured from popular songbooks. Instrumental soloists can rehearse to the sound of a full orchestra, at any tempo. Classical music MIDI hobbyists are able to recreate their favorite repertoire without spending hours at the keyboard. Music teachers and other educators can use MIDISCAN as a powerful teaching tool since it requires no musical training to operate.
A scanner (either hand or full-page) is used first to capture each page of a musical score. The scanner outputs TIFF files (Tagged Image File Format) of multiple pages of music. MIDISCAN automatically loads these files and processes them sequentially. It keeps track of every page, staff system and staff line processed, regardless of whether the music is scored for ensemble, part or solo instruments.
The recognition process is essentially "hands-off." The user is not required to interact with the software other than to initiate the recognition sequence. Accuracy of recognitions is up to 98 percent. Each page takes approximately three to five minutes to process.
The MNOD graphic editor allows for full correction of the recognized score. The original music is displayed in one window with the reconstructed MNOD version below it. MNOD displays each note in the same spatial relationship as the original music. Correcting misrecognized symbols is simple and intuitive. An interactive graphic toolbox contains all necessary musical symbols for editing. Once edited, the corrected MNOD file is converted to a multitrack MIDI file and saved to disk. MIDI files can be played by most synthesizers and MPC sound cards with any sequencing program.
MIDISCAN retails for $379 and is available directly from Musitek (order line: 800-656-8055) and is nationally distributed through ThinkWare (800-369-6191).
