MUSIC OF THEIR HOMELAND.

Byline: David Bloom David Bloom (May 22, 1963 – April 6, 2003) was an NBC journalist (co-anchor of Weekend Today and reporter) until his sudden death in 2003 at the age of 39. Early life  Staff Writer

If X is a set of sets, and S is the union of all the elements of X, then there exists a function f:X -> S such that for all non-empty x in X, f(x) is an element of x.

In their just-released third album, ''In the Garden of Souls,'' Ali's rich voice gracefully floats over the music in a sound often likened to Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard.

Ali says her music comes from a rootless upbringing, fleeing family and political strife in Iran at age 4 to live in India and then the United States. But that rootlessness is common among the estimated 600,000 Persian expats of Southern California.

``There's just this sense (among many) young Persians of not belonging anywhere,'' Ali said. ``There is just that sense of being homeless.''

Axiom of Choice leader Loga Ramin Ramin (Gonystylus) is a genus of about 30 species of hardwood trees native to southeast Asia, in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea, with the highest species diversity on Borneo.  Torkian had a more traditional Iranian upbringing, and it shows in the more traditional sound of his group's lovely and contemplative music.

Rumi and other Middle Eastern poets provide some lyrics, while Loga plays a unique quarter-tone guitar with movable frets, creating music that haunts like a muezzin's call to evening prayers.

Like Ali, Torkian speaks of the alien's alienation and how that suffuses the music he co-writes with lead singer Mamek Khadem.

``I went back to Iran after 20-some years for a visit recently,'' Torkian said. ``I speak the language very well. Nevertheless, people there knew I lived in America. That was an affirmation that we are (of) neither (country), and both.''
