It's humbling for those of us who play guitar to see a master like Eric Clapton tell you how hard he had to practice to play a Robert Johnson Robert Johnson may refer to:

In politics:
  • Robert Johnson (governor), South Carolina
  • Robert Johnson (Texas) (1929–1995), member of Texas state legislature 1956–63
  • Robert D. Johnson (1883–1961), U.S.
tune. No, not back when Clapton was a teen and first discovered the blues legend and thought there was a second guitarist on the albums. What Slowhand was referring to was his preparation for his new CD/DVD, ``Sessions for Robert J.'' As if almost to prove his point, on the next song he plays, Clapton executes the opening riff and abruptly stops, clearly dissatisfied. After flexing his hand, he begins again.

These discs are great fun and a nice tribute to the influential Johnson, whose classic Columbia discs are no longer listed in the new edition of the ``Rolling Stone rolling stone

Robert Cray was among artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Thorogood, who got wider radio airplay and regular MTV video exposure during the late 1980s.
enjoying themselves as they trade guitar licks on Robert Johnson's ``Sweet Home Chicago'' is almost worth the price of this double DVD. Last June in Dallas, Clapton brought together a slew of guitar players - B.B. King, Guy, Eric Johnson

More than three hours of the concert, including interviews, show up on the discs. Most of it sounds great, and the way it was shot puts you right in the picture. The quibbling comes from what was put in and what was left out. For my part, I would have preferred more from the bluesier types - King, Guy, etc.

The acoustic players like Dan Tyminski, Ron Block and Jerry Douglas, who Taylor called the Muhammad Ali of the Dobro, are fun, too. And why not more from session man extraordinaire ex·tra·or·di·naire

MANA: ``Acceso Total'' (Warner Music Latina; $17.99)

This concert DVD puts you front and center at stops along the Mexican pop-rock band's 2002-03 tour of 28 countries. Live footage includes performances of such perennial favorites as ``Vivir Sin Aire,'' ``Rayando el Sol'' and ``Clavado en un Bar.''

The disc also features interviews with each of the four members as well as a segment on the band's environmental work through its grass-roots organization, Selva Negra. A must-have for Mana diehards.

JEFFERSON AIRPLANE: ``Fly Jefferson Airplane'' (Eagle Vision/Eagle Rock; $19.98)

Focusing on the Airplane's 1965-73 run, this fine documentary takes in vintage performances by the beloved West Coast group plus interviews from band members Grace Slick, Jack Casady, Marty Balin, Paul Kantner and others.

Unedited clips of 13 songs, including ``White Rabbit,'' ``Somebody to Love,'' ``It's No Secret'' and ``Volunteers'' (which recently found its way into a car commercial) prove the group was often head and shoulders above many of its contemporaries. The top-notch musicianship of bassist Casady and drummer Spencer Dryden still shines, and it's easy to spot the folkie folk·ie also folk·y

CAT STEVENS: ``Majikat: Earth Tour 1976'' (Eagle Vision/Eagle Rock; $19.98)

Nearly two years before quitting music, Cat Stevens recorded this concert at William & Mary College in Williamsburg, Va. He opened the show with ``The Wind,'' followed by ``Moonshadow'' and other classics: ``Hard Headed Woman,'' ``Oh Very Young,'' ``Two Fine People,'' ``Father & Son,'' ``Peace Train'' and an encore of ``Wide World.''

This is Cat Stevens in his prime. But in case you're curious, the DVD also includes a three-part interview with the artist as he is today, as Yusuf Islam, talking about his life, career and spiritual awakening. In addition to the interview the DVD includes an animated short that is set to the song ``Moonshadow,'' a promotional film of ``Father & Son'' and various TV performances.
