, baton in hand, it's probably Grant Gershon.

In May, Gershon became the new choral director and associate conductor of Los Angeles Opera The Los Angeles Opera is an opera company in Los Angeles, California, United States. The company's home base is the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, part of the Los Angeles Music Center. , a post he will hold simultaneously with his position as music director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale The Los Angeles Master Chorale is a famous professional chorus in Los Angeles, California. Grant Gershon has been its music director since 2001, succeeding Paul Salamunovich. . The good news is, they're right across the street from one another.

"I'm very pleased about it -- and so is my family," said Gershon, who lives in Eagle Rock with his wife of 20 years, Elissa, 8-year-old daughter Claire, and 5-year-old son Samuel. "At this point in my career, it's great to have this association with these two great companies, though there will be times when I'm literally running back and forth.

"We're still defining my role at the opera," Gershon continued. "But as chorus master, I'll be preparing and overseeing everything the chorus does this season -- and it's a big season for the ensemble. I'll also be conducting eight performances over the next two years. Beyond that, I'll be involved with every production, especially when Placido Placido may refer to any of the following: People

It is also a fairly common surname in Southern Italy.
(Domingo) and James (Conlon, the company's music director) are out of town, to help oversee the music's consistency."

At the moment, Gershon is focusing his attention on L.A. Opera's season-opening performances of Beethoven's ode-to-

freedom opera, "Fidelio" (Sept. 8 through Oct. 6) and a grand concert performance of the Verdi "Requiem" (Sept. 9).

"It's the ideal combination for me to be starting off with," he said. "They are both pieces where you can work as much on the pure musical values as you can on the drama. Beethoven's choral work in 'Fidelio' is, I think, right up there with the Ninth Symphony. And you can't get any more dramatic than the Verdi 'Requiem.' "

At 48 (though he hardly looks a day over 35), Gershon said he's pleased with his new multitasking multitasking

 arrangement for several reasons.

"This last year I've done a lot more work in opera, mainly conducting the new opera, 'The Grapes of Wrath,' at Minnesota and Utah Opera," he explained. "But it meant I spent 11 weeks away. One of the perks of this new position is that I'll get to spend more time at home."
