Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

For a while, Highland High appeared to be Thousand Oaks' best friend, ready to swipe the Bulldog Invitational wrestling tournament title for the Lancers lanc·er

a perfect record and the championship.

Murrieta, ranked seventh in Division 3, outlasted Highland, the top team in Division 4, 33-24 to finish 10-0 in the two-day event.

Highland had already lost 45-18 to unranked Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. The Lancers, who dropped a heartbreaking 36-31 decision to Murrieta, probably would have won the overall championship on tiebreakers if there were a three-way tie.

``It would have been real nice (for the Bulldogs to beat the Nighthawks),'' Thousand Oaks coach Manuel Valdez said. ``We had a couple of close losses (against Murrieta) that could have given us the win.''

Highland's loss to the Nighthawks also was sealed with a number of tight decisions that went against the Bulldogs.

Rallying from 15-3 down, the Bulldogs tied it on eventual 140-pound champion John Garfinkel's 6-0 win over Pat Meredith. But at 145, Robert Estrada lost 2-1 to Jim Morlock and the Nighthawks took command. The teams split the next two bouts, but Adam Cloud was beaten 5-3 by Tony Wilson Anthony Howard Wilson (20 February 1950 – 10 August 2007) was an English record label owner, radio presenter, TV show host, nightclub manager, impresario and journalist for Granada Television and the BBC. , who scored a tiebreaking reversal with 22 seconds left.

Mike Luman closed in on a pin of Murrieta's Travis Nesbitt in the 215-pound bout. While Nesbitt escaped from the near fall he quickly turned the tables and pinned Luman at 3:54 to all but seal the win.

``There were four or five matches where we were within a point or two of winning,'' said Bulldogs coach Mike Young, who saw major improvement between this loss to the Nighthawks and a 49-12 decision in the finals of the Murrieta Valley tournament.
