MURPHY TO OVERSEE CALARTS' THEATER.
VALENCIA - One year before the scheduled opening of the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater in downtown Los Angeles, CalArts has named an executive director who will finalize the venue's inaugural season.
Mark Murphy was promoted from acting artistic director of the facility known as REDCAT, part of the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex due to open next October.
Formerly the artistic director for the On The Boards performance center in Seattle, Murphy said REDCAT will serve as a performance and gallery venue for California Institute of the Arts' students and faculty, as well as offer as a cultural center for communities in Southern California.
The Walt Disney Concert Hall, located across from the Music Center, continues a tradition between the arts college and Disney that began more than 40 years ago, when Walt Disney helped found CalArts.
REDCAT's inaugural season will include weeklong residencies by international contemporary performance ensembles and concerts ranging from chamber music to experimental jazz.
Under Murphy's guidance, the theater will also present innovative film series and festivals, as well as art and dance exhibits and readings from some of literature's brightest writers.
``I am thrilled to be a part of what I know will be a very important cultural center and influential force in Los Angeles cultural ecology,'' Murphy said.
