In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  trustees have given final approval to a policy that will regulate students' use of cellular phones in school.

The policy was adopted after recent passage of state legislation ending bans of students' cell phones from campuses.

Under the Muroc policy, pupils in kindergarten kindergarten [Ger.,=garden of children], system of preschool education. Friedrich Froebel designed (1837) the kindergarten to provide an educational situation less formal than that of the elementary school but one in which children's creative play instincts would be  through eighth grade can have cell phones on campus but must go to the school office and ask for permission before making a call, Superintendent Mike Summerbell said.

High school students may use their cell phones during lunch and nutrition breaks, but must ask at the office for permission to use them on campus at any other times.

``We have student members on the board,'' Summerbell said. ``We asked for input from them. At both high schools, we've been kind of enforcing the rules (on a pilot basis). They all feel the kids are happy with that and not abusing it.'' The board approved the policy last week.

Until 2003, cell phones had been illegal on school campuses under a 1980s law aimed at preventing campus drug deals facilitated by pagers. But state lawmakers in 2002 revoked the ban because cell phones have become commonplace.

District officials earlier said no incidents prompted the district to consider a formal board policy. Measures dealing with the issue had been implemented at the schools, but there had been no formal board policy in place.

Students can use the phones before and after school and at some school activities.
