Jaime Mares, 21, of Inglewood was charged with two counts of murder - one for the slaying of Brown, another for the drive-by killing of Santa Monica resident Gerardo Sernas, said Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey C. Jonas.

Brown, a 27-year-old decorated Marine veteran of Somalia, was killed Nov. 29 when suspects in the drive-by shooting opened fire on his patrol car with an assault weapon. Other officers shot and killed the gunman, Oscar Zatarain, 23.
