MULTOS News Around Smart Card '99 Underlines Growing Support and Network Access Focus as Hitachi Announces More Than One Million MULTOS Chips Ordered.

Hitachi today announced that it now has orders for more than one million units for the world's first MULTOS chip to be shipping in volume. The Hitachi H8/3112 MULTOS chip has been shipping since September 1998 and enables customers to effectively implement MULTOS multi-application smart card applications.

BT Chooses MULTOS

BT has chosen the MULTOS stand (number M148) at Smart Card '99 to demonstrate a new digital ID solution which provides consumers with a secure, portable access token In Windows NT, an internal security card that is generated when users log in. It contains the security IDs (SIDs) for the user and all the groups the user belongs to. The application will incorporate the popular and market leading ActivCard range of secure identity and access tools for online service providers and users.

Japan's Key Companies Back MULTOS

On 15th February, Hitachi, Japan's largest system integrator announced a new enhanced 16K chip (H8/3114) which supports MULTOS version 4.0 in readiness for a rash of new MULTOS enabled applications that are hitting the world-wide market. "We strongly believe that MULTOS will become the de facto standard Hardware or software that is widely used, but not endorsed by a standards organization. Contrast with de jure standard.

. The franchisees will implement Mondex electronic cash on the MULTOS platform further reinforcing MULTOS' position as the defacto standard for financial applications and underlining the strong support it enjoys from major companies in the Japanese market, including MYCAL and Fujitsu.

Major Finnish Manufacturers Lend Support

The new Hitachi chip will be available to the numerous card fabricators that are lending their support to the MULTOS platform. Recent announcements include the news that Finland's two largest card fabricators Setec and Miotec are to offer MULTOS cards. Lauri Pesonen, Setec's Division Manager for Smart Cards explains his company's reason for joining the list of MULTOS suppliers: "As Setec has a clear focus on demanding high end smart card solutions, it is only natural that we also look into the potential of MULTOS." He added, "As we have been working for many years at Setec with smart card based interpreters, we see obvious possibilities in applying our expertise in developing applications on the MULTOS platform too."

Hitachi Launches Development Tools

For those building smart card systems software based on the MULTOS platform things have also got easier. For on-card application development Hitachi has released a set of MULTOS 4.0 development tools to speed application construction. A 7 day evaluation kit will be available free of charge to developers from the MULTOS and Hitachi stands at the show.

Support for MULTOS-based systems also comes from InterVoice, the leading supplier of call automation systems and interactive voice response systems. The InterVoice Gateway and associated products now support MULTOS smart cards allowing innovations such as personal ATMs to be attached to phones so that consumers can withdraw electronic cash or download new applications to their card using the telephone.

New Focus For MULTOS
