MUHLENKAMP FUND SCORES BIG AS IT NEARS FIFTH ANNIVERSARY

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Muhlenkamp Fund, a mutual fund managed by Muhlenkamp & Company, Inc., an investment management firm, continues to produce high returns and receive high marks from national publications and investors, it was announced today.
Forbes Magazine rated the fund No. 5 in its recent feature on small equity no-load funds, and Investment Advisor Magazine rated the fund No. 2 in growth and income, based on a 25 percent return for the 12-month period ending March 31, 1993. The fund has extended these good results and reports annual returns of 28 percent for the one year, 21 percent for the two years, and 24 percent for the three years ending Aug. 31, 1993.
The Muhlenkamp Fund, which will celebrate its fifth anniversary in November of this year, currently lists over 700 investors and more than $9 million in assets, and has doubled in assets since December of 1992. Launched by founder Ron Muhlenkamp, president of Muhlenkamp & Company, Inc., the fund was established in response to repeated requests from individuals, executives and small business owners who were looking for an investment vehicle run by Muhlenkamp and geared to the smaller investor, a spokesman said.
"When I decided to start my own fund, I was called 'crazy' by a number of my friends and colleagues," said Muhlenkamp. "But I thought it made sense, and decided to go for it. Now, it seems that I wasn't so crazy after all."
Often called a "Renaissance Man" by those who have met him, there's nothing stereotypical about Muhlenkamp. Comfortable with doing things in an unorthodox fashion, he often rides to his office on a motorcycle and is chief of his local volunteer fire department. The venture into the fund arena surprised only those who didn't know him well, the spokesman said.
Muhlenkamp says, "When you're in the business of investing, your clients rely on you to do your homework. Doing that homework gives you the confidence to disagree with the crowd. In the final analysis, our clients pay us to chart our own course, independently of the crowd. At Muhlenkamp & Company, we look for areas where the facts say one thing and public opinion says another; when we find them there's an opportunity to make money."
The Muhlenkamp Fund is a no-load mutual fund, featuring a $200 minimum initial investment, dividend reinvestment and automatic withdrawal plans. The fund is invested in stocks, bonds or cash equivalents in varying amounts, depending on the asset mix deemed appropriate by Muhlenkamp & Company, Inc. fund managers.
Muhlenkamp & Company, Inc. is an investment management firm which manages over $60 million in assets and whose primary clients are businesses and individuals with portfolios exceeding $300,000.
