MTU 8000 With 9000 ...
... kW, that is. The 20-cylinder Series 8000, presented at
Euronaval 2000, is the strongest unit MTU offers in its line of naval
powerplants. The Series 8000 features 20 cylinders in a 48 [degrees]
`V' configuration and a 265/315 mm bore/ stroke measurement, with
each cylinder displacing 17.35 litres. The engine's
high-performance output rating is 9000 kW with a maximum continuous
rating of 8200 kW. A common rail fuel injection system, a technology
successfully deployed in the 4000 series, allows engineers to
independently determine all injection parameters, thus allowing fuel
consumption and exhaust emissions to be considerably reduced. The Series
8000 also features optional sequential turbocharging, where individual
exhaust turbochargers can be switched on and off during operation,
depending on the engine's power demand. Available in diesel, gas
and heavy-fuelled versions, the 8000 has been IMO certified for exhaust
emissions and the level of structure-borne noise when idling, or at
partial load range, has been considerably decreased, enough so to
compare to that emitted by conventional injection system engines.
