FlexPack is a soft flexible film with high-barrier properties that protect medications from moisture and gasses. A polyethylene-based plastic, which is more environmentally friendly than PVC PVC: see polyvinyl chloride.
PVC
 in full polyvinyl chloride

Synthetic resin, an organic polymer made by treating vinyl chloride monomers with a peroxide.
(polyvinylchloride), is the material that is now most commonly used in U.S. pharmaceutical packaging. MTS has been working on higher barrier plastics for several years, since the United States Pharmacopeia United States Pharmacopeia /Unit·ed States Phar·ma·co·peia/ (USP) a legally recognized compendium of standards for drugs, published by The United States Pharmacopeial Convention, Inc., and revised periodically.  ("USP USP - unique sales point ") modified its guidelines to allow pharmacies a one-year beyond-use date for packaging materials that are "better than PVC." The previous standard for PVC allowed for only six months beyond-use dating. MTS is now able to utilize materials that it believes exceeds this standard at an affordable price that was not previously available to this market. Comparable high barrier products, such as PVDC PVDC Poly-Vinylidene Dichloride  and Aclar[R](a), are four to seven times, respectively, more expensive than our new material and are more difficult to produce and use in our applications.

Todd E. Siegel, MTS President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "After years of research and experimentation, we are pleased to bring FlexPack to market and believe it will provide our customers with significant advantages over current products. The soft flexible film, as opposed to the typical rigid film, is very user friendly for the administering nurse who may sometimes need to administer (push through) hundreds of tablets per day. In addition, the higher barrier properties of FlexPack is expected to allow pharmacies to utilize a longer beyond-use dating of up to one year, which will save our customers from having to prematurely destroy medications that have been prepackaged pre·pack·age

."

Siegel added that if the USP were to adopt an even higher barrier-property guideline, MTS believes it could readily meet this requirement since the new material passes the highest standard, "Class A" rating. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration ("FDA FDA

Notes:
The expiration date for all listed stock options in the U.S.
without the added cost of stability studies, if the material used meets the "Class A" standard. We have many repackagers as customers who will also benefit from FlexPack.

Siegel concluded, "Due to the polyethylene base of FlexPack, the film is more environmentally friendly than PVC, which is currently the plastic used most frequently in the U.S. pharmaceutical packaging market. We also believe this will be an important feature for our customers in Europe, as the more stringent European ecological regulations typically favor environmentally friendly products."
