MTMC moves to latest reorganization phase.

goal has been achieved," said Maj. Gen. Kenneth L. Privratsky, Commander. "This command-and-control move reduces layering and streamlines our operations."

Under the new structure, the 597th Transportation Group, Sunny Point, N.C.; the 598th Transportation Group, Rotterdam, the Netherlands; and the 599th Transportation Group, Wheeler Army Air Field, Hawaii, are now officially under the command and control of the MTMC Operations Center The facility or location on an installation, base, or facility used by the commander to command, control, and coordinate all crisis activities. , Va., and report directly to Brig. Gen. Barbara Doornink, Deputy Commanding General/Director of Operations.

"The new organization provides a single-touch button for defense transportation system operations worldwide," said Doornink.

The 597th Transportation Terminal Group now provides command and control of the Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, and five transportation terminal battalions and their subordinate units. The group's area of operations An operational area defined by the joint force commander for land and naval forces. Areas of operation do not typically encompass the entire operational area of the joint force commander, but should be large enough for component commanders to accomplish their missions and protect their  responsibility includes all of North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. , South America, and the Caribbean. This represents a vastly expanded mission for the group, which previously was responsible for operations mainly associated with the Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point.

Previously, the command's two overseas groups reported directly to MTMC's Commanding General in Alexandria, Va. All 24 of the command's global water terminal units are now in the chain of command under Doornink.

In the past, MTMC command-and-control processes have included several intermediate headquarters. Earlier, MTMC used the separate Eastern Area Command, Bayonne, N.J., and Western Area Command, Oakland, Calif., for the command and control of its continental U.S. and Puerto Rico terminal units. This organization was centralized at MTMC's former Deployment Support Command, Oct. 2, 1998. As part of continuing reorganization efforts, the MTMC Operations Center at Fort Eustis was activated Nov. 7 to provide MTMC with a single hub for global operations.

A fourth MTMC subordinate command, the Transportation Engineering Agency, Newport News, Va., will continue to report directly to the MTMC Commanding General.
