MTMC helps move 1,000 ammunition containers. (Single port manager).Members of the 837th Transportation Battalion will long remember this year's Turbo Cads 2001 exercise at the Chinhae, Korea, ammunition pier. Over the course of five weeks, we served as the Single Port Manager for the movement of more than 1,000 ammunition containers. We had the mission to receive, document, stage and clear the pier of 455 import ammunition containers. The retrograde movement Any movement of a command to the rear, or away from the enemy. We had to do some precise handling to assure an efficient intermodal discharge at MTMC's 834th Transportation Battalion, Concord, Calif. It was no wonder this year's exercise was the largest in recent history. U.S. Transportation Command sponsors the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff exercise. As the Single Port Manager, we were responsible for the cargo documentation mission at Chinhae, one hour south of Pusan. It was a colossal job, as we had soldiers away on deployment support teams in such diverse locations as Chilpo Beach, Thailand and Australia. We also had our daily work regimen at our own Pier 8. Several factors worked in our favor. We had worked out numerous details ahead of time at our quarterly theater ammunition conferences. We provided all participants with a memorandum of agreement A memorandum of agreement (MOA) or cooperative agreement is a document written between parties to cooperatively work together on an agreed upon project or meet an agreed upon objective. The purpose of an MOA is to have a written understanding of the agreement between parties. we have with the 6th Ordnance Battalion, which lays out the standards and procedures for shipping ammunition at Chinhae. We also worked closely with the Republic of Korea Port Operations Group A task-organized unit, located at the seaport of embarkation and/or debarkation under the control of the landing force support party and/or combat service support element, that assists and provides support in the loading and/or unloading and staging of personnel, supplies, and equipment , which provided all of the labor and equipment for operations at Chinhae. The first containers arrived at Chinhae pier May 8. Sgt. 1st Class Ron Choe, Operations NCOIC NCOIC Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (military) NCOIC Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium , worked in Chinhae from May 8 through June 4 to conduct the ammunition container staging and documentation mission. Choe did a tremendous job staging the containers by final destination and stow location. We got additional assistance from the 1156th Contract Supervision Detachment, an Army Reserve unit that was conducting active-duty training at Pier 8 June 7-14. Unit members were a key part of our 24-hour operation. The last container was loaded June 16 on the Maersk Alaska. After moving 1,000 containers, it was the end of mission--and a lot of work by all. The mission's success, however, was assured by our error-free documentation process. By Maj. Sam Blanton Operations Officer 837th Transportation Battalion |
