MTMC gives permanent site to U.S. Coast Guard. (New York Harbor).

 has arranged the transfer of a 27-acre site to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard had used a site at the Military Ocean Terminal Bayonne in recent years as a navigational support site since the closure of nearby Governor's Island.

A new building was constructed there in 1997, and renovations continue, said Cdr. "We're delighted to be able to leave the Coast Guard a permanent presence in New York Harbor," said John Jakubowski, a MTMC legal officer working on the Base Realignment and Closure Base Realignment and Closure (or BRAC) is a process of the United States federal government directed at the administration and operation of the Armed Forces, used by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Congress to close excess military installations and realign  action.

"This will be a permanent reminder of the long and valuable service Military Ocean Terminal Bayonne played in the nation's defense."

Under the agreement signed Jan. 12, the Coast Guard will obtain use to the 27-acre parcel, adjacent to a deep-water dock, said Jakubowski.

"It is an absolutely wonderful waterfront location," said Jakubowski.

"Environmental engineers tell us that the channel is the deepest natural watercourse in the entire harbor."

"It is a major milestone for the Coast Guard," said Frost. "It obviously provides us a permanent home for the Aids-To-Navigation Team and the buoy tenders that work at that location."

The station has a permanent staff of approximately 20 Coast Guard personnel.

 agreed to release the site in August 1999, said Virginia King, MTMC's Base Realignment and Closure Program Manager. However, environmental issues delayed the action.

The transfer of the 27-acre site is part of the final MTMC transfer of Bayonne.
