MTMC conducts historic Black Sea move. (Cover Story).


The Military Traffic Management command A major command of the US Army, and the US Transportation Command's component command responsible for designated continental United States land transportation as well as common-user water terminal and traffic management service to deploy, employ, sustain, and redeploy US forces on a  has conducted the biggest equipment movement in its history on the Black Sea.

The 598th Transportation Group directed the movement of a task force of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Feb. 23 through the Bulgarian port of Bourgas.

The task force is returning to its home base of Fort Campbell Fort Campbell is a United States Army installation located between Hopkinsville, Kentucky and Clarksville, Tennessee and is home to the 101st Airborne Division.

The fort is named in honor of BG William Bowen Campbell, the last Whig Governor of Tennessee.

The movement is part of, an evaluation of Bourgas for future MTMC equipment movements, said Lt. Col. Tom Boyle, Commander, Task Force Bourgas. Such factors as the quality of port facilities, Bulgarian military support and force protection will be evaluated to determine if other movements will take place through the port, he said.

"This port gives us the flexibility that we would like to use in the future" said Boyle.

MTMC transporters found a large port capable of handling several ships and a nearby modern commercial airport.

"Using this port provides the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. European Command, with an-other choice by providing another access point into the Balkans," said Maj. Carl Axelson, Commander, 953rd Transportation Co., Piraeus, Greece.

Support from the Bulgarian military reduced the size of the American military presence in the operation, said Axelson. Bulgarian assistance included maintenance support, divers Several; any number more than two; different.

The Military Traffic Management Command movement is supported by Task Force Bourgas, about 70 personnel mostly from the Army's 21st Theater Support Command, Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Bourgas is the second largest port in Bulgaria, and is in close proximity to Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. Bulgarian roads and railways link the port with major industrial inland points of the Balkans.
