StorageWare FC, a Fibre Channel-attached subsystem, allows customers to begin implementing Fibre Channel architectures immediately and enjoy the benefits of Fibre Channel technology. Acceptance of Fibre Channel is increasing dramatically with Dataquest predicting a $10 billion market by the year 2000.

Fibre Channel is the next generation I/O interface for computer subsystems and peripherals. Current SCSI-II protocols have reached limits which are restricting performance and scaleability for many customer environments. The Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (hardware, standard) Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop - (FC-AL) A fast serial bus interface standard intended to replace SCSI on high-end servers.

) industry standard offers up to 100MB/second of performance, support for up to 126 devices and cable distances of up to 10Km.

"StorageWare FC has been designed to address the immediate needs of customers in software-based RAID or JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) A group of hard disks in a computer that are not set up as any type of RAID configuration. They are just a bunch of disks.

environments," said Earl Pearlman, MTI president and chief executive officer.

"Our new FC-AL JBOD product -- StorageWare FC -- is the first of several products in our Fibre Channel family. StorageWare FC will compliment our Fibre channel-based Gladiator RAID arrays which we expect will be shipping later this calendar year."

MTI's first product, StorageWare FC, is designed to give clients a safe and practical entry point for adopting Fibre Channel into their IT environment. StorageWare FC consists of an eight-drive chassis (single rack-mountable shelf), an optional Fibre Channel host adapter, an optional Fibre Channel hub and associated Fibre Channel cables. The shelf utilizes dual 300-Watt power supplies (with dual power cords) and supports hot-swappable power supplies and disk drives.

"There's no doubt that the market is shifting to Fibre Channel technology as a long-term investment," said Thomas Lahive, a senior industry analyst at Dataquest. "Today's highly competitive environments demand a stable technology that offers better performance, increased device count, and greater physical distance. Moving to this new technology is inevitable, but companies will approach it cautiously. I commend MTI for delivering a FC-AL-based subsystem using industry-standard components, satisfying an immediate high-performance demand from its customer base."

MTI's StorageWare FC is currently available, with an approximate four-week lead time. Initially, the product will support IBM(R) AIX(R) 4.2, with SGI(R) IRIX A Unix-based operating system from SGI that is used in its computer systems from desktop to supercomputer. It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment.
