MTEL REPORTS 239,100 UNITS IN SERVICE; BESTS PREVIOUS
 RECORD SALES QUARTER IN U.S.
JACKSON, Miss., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) today announced it had 239,100 messaging units in service worldwide as of Sept. 30, 1992 -- a 43 percent increase over the third quarter a year ago.
"Mtel added 16,800 units in the United States in the third quarter, making this the best single sales quarter for our SkyTel Corp. subsidiary," J. Robert Fugate, chief financial officer of Mtel.
According to Fugate, prior to the second quarter 1992 record of 16,000 units, the company had averaged 11,850 net additions in the U.S. for the previous four quarters.
"We feel that our record growth, during uncertain economic times, is testimony to SkyTel's ability to reduce subscribers' overall telecommunications costs while at that same time enabling them to be more responsive to their colleagues and their customers," Fugate said.
Mtel's third quarter total includes 166,200 SkyPager units and 22,300 SkyTalk units in the United States, as well as 44,700 paging units in the United Kingdom and 5,900 units in Mexico (a 49-percent share of the units reported by Mtel's joint venture company in Mexico.)
SkyTel units in the United States in the third quarter grew at a 41 percent annual increase from the third quarter of 1991. Paging units in the U.K. rose at a 33 percent annual rate of growth for the same time period.
SkyTel Corp., based in Washington, D.C., is the principal subsidiary of Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (Mtel) and the leading nationwide messaging company with 188,500 units in service in the United States as of Sept. 30, 1992.
Mtel, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is engaged in businesses which include nationwide paging and voice messaging services (provided by SkyTel Corp.) in the United States, nationwide paging services in the United Kingdom; investments in international messaging through Mtel International; an investment in American Mobile Satellite Corp. (AMSC); and other businesses. Mtel's common stock is quoted on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol MTEL.
