 MTEL NAMES WELSH AND BARBOUR TO BOARD
 JACKSON, Miss., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication


Technologies Corp. ("Mtel") (NASDAQ-NMS: MTEL) today announced that it has elected John E. Welsh III, 41, and Haley Barbour, 44, to its board of directors.
 Mtel's chairman of the board and chief executive officer, John N. Palmer, said, "Jack and Haley bring a unique blend of financial community and government affairs experience to Mtel and we're pleased to name them to our board."
 Mr. Welsh is a managing director of Seaport Capital Inc., a private merchant banking and financial advisory firm in New York that provides investment advice to the Prudential Insurance Company of America and to Prudential-Bache Capital Partners I & II. From November 1990 until December 1991, Mr. Welsh was a managing director of Prudential-Bache Interfunding, Inc., the merchant banking arm of Prudential Securities. He joined Prudential Securities Inc. in 1983 as a vice president in mergers and acquisitions, and until November 1990 was a managing director and co-head of the mergers and acquisitions department.
 Prior to joining Prudential Securities, Mr. Welsh spent five years with Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. Mr. Welsh's experience also included three years with the finance department of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. before accepting an appointment from the mayor of Wilmington, Del., to serve as assistant director of commerce. He received a B.S. from Lehigh University in 1972 and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1978. Mr. Welsh is a director of York International Corporation, Spreckels Industries, Inc., which is headquartered in San Francisco, and Empire of America Realty Credit Corporation in New York.
 Mr. Barbour is a partner with Barbour & Rogers, a Washington-based law firm specializing in strategy and advocacy. He is also a managing director and principal of National Environmental Strategies, Inc. (Washington), an environmental consulting firm that represents corporations and trade associations.
 From 1985 to 1986, Mr. Barbour served in the Reagan Administration, first as special assistant to the president for political affairs and, later, as deputy assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Political Affairs.
 In 1988, Mr. Barbour was a senior advisor to George Bush for the presidential campaign and directed the Southern Primary Project, the GOP's Super Tuesday program. Mr. Barbour serves on the board of AMTRAK, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation and is a director of Deposit Guaranty National Bank, Mississippi's largest banking system.
 He holds a B.A. degree and a law degree from the University of Mississippi.
 Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp., headquartered in Jackson, is engaged in businesses which include nationwide paging and voice messaging services (provided through SkyTel Corp.) in the United States; nationwide paging services in the United Kingdom; investments in international messaging through Mtel International; an investment in AMSC; and other operations. Mtel's common stock is quoted on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol MTEL.
