MTEL HAS 291,300 UNITS WORLDWIDE; SKYTEL CORP. POSTS BEST QUARTER TO DATE

 JACKSON, Miss., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunications Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) today reported that it had 291,300 paging and voice messaging units in service worldwide as of June 30, 1993 -- a 34 percent increase over the same quarter a year ago.
 "Mtel's second quarter sales performance was driven by SkyTel Corp. which posted 23,500 net additions in the United States -- 53 percent more than last quarter and 40 percent more than SkyTel's previous best quarter, the third quarter of 1992," said J. Robert Fugate, chief financial officer of Mtel.
 The new second quarter total includes 216,000 SkyPager units and 25,400 SkyTalk units in the United States, as well as 34,800 paging units in the United Kingdom and 15,100 units in Mexico.
 Fugate added, "Alphanumeric or text messaging is emerging as a fast- growing subsegment of our U.S. business with SkyWord net sales increasing by 70 percent over the last quarter."
 In Mexico, Mtel's 15,100 units represents the company's 49 percent share of the 30,800 units recorded in the second quarter by Comunicaciones Mtel (CMtel), a joint venture with Grupo Televisa S.A. de C.V.
 Mtel's portion of the new CMtel total represents a 27 percent increase over last quarter's total of 11,900 units.
 "CMtel continues to grow rapidly in Mexico where nationwide alphanumeric messaging is by far the most popular service among the more than 30,000 Mexican business travelers now using our wireless messaging services," Fugate said.
