MTEL COMPLETES TEST OF TWO-WAY WIRELESS SYSTEM IN DALLAS

JACKSON, Miss., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) announced today that it has successfully completed tests of its Nationwide Wireless Network (NWN) demonstration system in Dallas. The tests reconfirmed the viability of Mtel's high-speed, two-way wireless messaging technology for NWN in a typical urban environment.
"This represents a significant milestone in the development of NWN. We are tremendously pleased with our technology alliance with Motorola in achieving such impressive results," said Jai P. Bhagat, president of Mtel Technologies, the division of Mtel that is developing NWN.
NWN is a proposed new two-way wireless network which will enable users to send and receive wireless messages, acknowledge message receipt and execute certain transactions wirelessly.
Subscribers of the system would use palmtops, laptops, personal organizers, personal digital assistants and new personal communicators being developed for two-way wireless communications. In 1992, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted Mtel a tentative Pioneer's Preference on licensing of spectrum for NWN.
Motorola worked with Mtel to develop the Dallas system components and participated in the collection of system data. "It has been Motorola's goal to fully support Mtel in the development of this advanced two-way, wireless data system. The Dallas test has successfully demonstrated its viability," said Robert L. Growney, executive vice president of Motorola, Inc. and general manager of the paging and wireless data group.
Key results include: successful deployment of the NWN simulcast forward channel (base transmitter to portable) at 24,000 bps using multicarrier modulation in an urban environment; the first field test of the NWN reverse channel (portable to base receiver); and the demonstration of a closed-loop message receipt and acknowledgement by the network.
The NWN Dallas test system used three functional base transmitters that provided overlapping coverage, six base receivers and two functional prototype NWN transceivers. The Dallas system was constructed under an FCC experimental license.
Mtel recently announced that its NWN venture received a $6 million investment from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a leading venture capital firm based in Silicon Valley.
As noted above, in July 1992, the FCC granted Mtel a tentative Pioneer's Preference for NWN in recognition of its efforts to develop this network technology. Under FCC policies, a Pioneer's Preference allows the FCC to grant a preference in licensing to companies responsible for major advances in telecommunications. Currently, the FCC is engaged in a rule making proceeding related to personal communications service operating in the 900 MHz range. The Pioneer's Preference, if reaffirmed during this rule making, will exempt Mtel in the subsequent licensing process for NWN from lotteries, comparative hearings or the competitive proceeding that companies go through in obtaining licenses.
Mtel Technologies is the division of Mtel that is responsible for NWN.
Mobil Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (Mtel), headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is engaged in businesses which include nationwide paging and voice messaging services (provided through SkyTel Corp.) in the United States; nationwide paging services in Mexico and the United Kingdom; investments in international messaging through Mtel International; an investment in American Mobile Satellite Corp. and other operations. Mtel's common stock is quoted on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol MTEL.
