dropping as much as 11 inches, the Hollywood extension of the MTA's Metro Red Line subway is finally set to open Saturday.

The transit agency advertises the new line as going from ``downtown to Tinseltown in 15 minutes,'' and the public will be able to test the claim by riding the subway free Saturday and Sunday.

Entertainment also will be featured from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at each of the five new stations on the new 4.6-mile segment running from Wilshire Boulevard Wilshire Boulevard is one of the principal east-west arterial roads in Los Angeles, California, United States.  board and staff and contractors have worked on this extension since 1993,'' said Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Marc Littman. ``It's going to prove to be a transit boon.''

The Red Line averages 30,000 to 40,000 passenger boardings weekdays, and the number is expected to rise eventually to 80,000 boardings with this new segment in operation, Littman said.

Construction worker Jaime Pasillas became the Red Line's first fatality in February 1995. He was killed beneath Hollywood Boulevard when a chain suspending a trash bin gave way.

Before that, worker Dale Gibson was burned over 90 percent of his body when an acetylene acetylene (əsĕt`əlēn') or ethyne (ĕth`īn), HC≡CH, a colorless gas. It melts at −80.8°C; and boils at −84.0°C;.  tank exploded. A cement mixer cut off a third worker's leg.

In 1994, tunnel-boring under Hollywood Boulevard caused the street to sink up to 11 inches, triggering a lawsuit by property and business owners. The case is still in court.

In June 1995, a sinkhole opened up farther east on Hollywood Boulevard near Barnsdall Park after a water main burst. The sinkhole caused a delay of more than six months.

Amid the publicity for Saturday's opening, two state lawmakers announced Thursday that they will attempt to force the MTA to improve its bus system before spending more on other projects.

Sen. Tom Hayden, D-Los Angeles, and Sen. Kevin Murray, D-Culver City, said their legislation will prod the agency to comply with a court agreement to reduce bus overcrowding overcrowding

The MTA is fighting a recent ruling by a court-appointed official who oversees compliance with the agreement.

The first part of the Red Line opened in 1993 and stretched 4.4 miles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. It cost $1.45 billion.

The second segment extended west to Wilshire and Western. That 2.1-mile extension and the new Hollywood link, together, cost $1.74 billion.

A final $1.3 billion, 6.3-mile extension is scheduled to open next year to North Hollywood.

When completed, the subway's cost, including principal and interest over 30 years, will reach about $6 billion. County voters fed up with the cost of the rail system voted in November for a ballot measure to end the use of local sales taxes for further subway construction.
