The Metropolitan Transportation Authority proposes spending $79 million for 94 articulated buses Articulated buses, also known as tandem buses, bendy buses or accordion buses in the UK and US, are a type of bus with an increased passenger capacity.  - the double-long coaches that seat more passengers than standard buses - and at least $45 million on 100 smaller buses.

The MTA said the procurements would satisfy a court order issued in April to buy 134 express buses, as well as a 2004 mandate to replace existing buses that need to be retired.

``We're going to buy what we need to,'' MTA spokesman Marc Littman said. ``We have to comply.''

But the Bus Riders Union, whose suit a decade ago led to the settlement agreement, said the latest plan is inadequate and that it will urge the MTA board, chaired by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. ``This plan comes up completely short,'' said BRU organizer Miguel Criollo Criollo

The group also said the MTA remains far behind in buying dozens of replacement buses and insists that more than 200 buses would be needed to satisfy both court orders.

The MTA's older fleet and poor service prompted the BRU's suit, which said riders were suffering on overcrowded o·ver·crowd

The suit was settled with the consent decree, which expires next year. But Criollo said the BRU could consider asking the court to extend the decree if the MTA does not fully respond to this latest order or commit to continued improvements.

``How this board moves (Thursday) will open up how we proceed.''

But transit advocate Bart Reed said the MTA has done enough.

``I believe that MTA has gone beyond the call of duty to meet the consent decree ... The BRU has twisted the truth way beyond acceptable reality.''
