MTA'S LOCAL COUNCILS TO STAY ON TRACK FIVE GROUPS WIN OFFICIAL'S PRAISE AT BOARD MEETING.

The MTA's year-old local governance councils have improved service, forged community partnerships and held more than 100 public meetings since they were formed, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority official said Thursday.

A proposal that would have scaled back councils' operations by reducing the number of public meetings from monthly to quarterly was withdrawn from Thursday's agenda.

Also Thursday, the MTA board voted to award the Eastside Light Rail line's $600 million construction contract to a joint venture, if the federal funding comes through in coming weeks. The MTA hopes to break ground this summer on the six-mile extension of the Gold Line into East Los Angeles East Los Angeles, uninc. city (1990 pop. 126,379), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles, in an industrial area.
