The strike called by the mechanics ATU, and being honored by the agency's drivers and other employees, has shut down 2,000 buses and four train lines. Public-transit users are unable to get around, and those in cars are experiencing 10 mph drops in rush-hour freeway speeds. The strike is costing the region as much as $4 million daily. The main issues center on the union's health benefits, with the MTA offering to increase its share of contributions, but the union wanting nearly three times the increase the agency is offering. The union is also fighting for increased contributions for its retirees' health care, but the MTA has offered no increase for retirees over age 65. The MTA also wants to share control of the benefits fund, which it claims has been mismanaged by the union. The MTA officials this week said they had offered an additional $87 million toward various union contracts this year, and planned to stand firmly against putting any more on the table. The agency is also in talks with the bus drivers- talks that are expected to resume on Sunday - as well as a smaller clerks' union.
