MT. SINAI DOCTOR RESPONDS TO RECENT BREAST IMPLANT CONTROVERSY
CLEVELAND, Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Plastic surgeon Lu-Jean Feng, M.D., who has been receiving national attention for being one of the few doctors removing silicone breast implants, said she is not surprised by the internal memos released Feb. 10 by Dow Corning, showing a long history of patient complaints.
"So many women have linked medical problems to their implants in conversations with me that I am not surprised the company had similar reports," said Feng, head of microvascular surgery at The Mt. Sinai Medical Center.
Feng has received calls from hundreds of patients since the Food and Drug Administration imposed a 45-day moratorium on the use of silicone breast implants last month. She has removed more than 140 implants over the last year and has seen patients from 17 different states and Canada.
Feng currently is conducting a study of women who may have developed connective tissue disease associated with silicone implants. The study is a joint effort by a multi-disciplinary group of physicians at Mt. Sinai and Case Western Reserve University, which includes a rheumatologist, pathologists, radiologists and epidemiologists. No conclusions have been drawn at this point, but the study will be submitted for publication upon completion.
Feng has been cautious in refusing to blame silicone implants on the wide variety of symptoms suffered by women. "This is a very controversial matter among plastic surgeons, and we need to wait until the research has been completed and accepted by a peer review publication before we can draw any conclusions."
