MT. SAC RELAYS: NOBODY KEEPS UP WITH JONES SHE DOMINATES FIELD TO WIN 400.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

WALNUT - The 400 meters looms as the obvious choice for Marion Jones' next conquest after she crushed the field at the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. Jones timed 49.59 seconds to become the fourth-fastest American of all-time to kick off her bid to win an unprecedented five Olympic gold Olympic Gold is the official video game of the XXV Olympic Summer Games, hosted by Barcelona, Spain in 1992. But for the moment, the two-time defending world 100 champion has no plans to take aim at Valerie Brisco's 1984 American record of 48.83 or add the 400 to her staple events of the 100, 200, long jump and 400-meter relay.

``Once Sydney is done and I celebrate that, then maybe I'll reassess my goals,'' Jones said. ``I am not saying I am going to come to Mt. SAC next year to break that record, but before my career is over and if I continue to get faster, then it will be another challenge out there that I think is attainable.''

Miller was never in contention and faded badly down the stretch to finish eighth in 55.21.

``I think it is a wonderful rivalry that everybody plays up,'' Jones said. ``My goal coming here was to run sub-50. If Inger was in the race that's great. I was not sending a message to Inger or any other athlete. I was sending a message to my brain that I am back and I am ready to run fast.''

Jones, who opened her season for the third consecutive year in the 400 at Mt. SAC, said she had trouble sleeping for the past two weeks, agonizing over Sunday's race.

I don't like the feeling when I am done, but it's something that challenges me to look inside myself: `Marion, what do you really have?' ''

Jones' husband C.J. Hunter, the 1999 world shot put champion, produced the world's best mark of the year - 71-4 - to win by more than four feet over 1995 and 1997 world champion John Godina (67-1).

Anjanette Kirkland and Mike Marsh were winners in the women's 100 hurdles and men's 100 in the 42nd annual meet.

Kirkland set a meet record of 12.63 to become the fourth-fastest American of all-time.

In the final Mt. SAC appearance of his career, Marsh, 32, the 1992 Olympic 200 gold medalist, won the 100 for the seventh time to edge Bryan Howard in a wind-aided 9.90.
