MSAS Global Logistics in 5 Year Deal to Provide New UK Distribution Solution for Kodak Limited.


LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 22, 1999--

MSAS (Multi-functional Transport Satellite-based Augmentation System) A Japanese system of earth stations and satellites that improves the tracking accuracy of the GPS navigation system down to approximately six feet.  Global Logistics has just signed a 5-year warehousing contract valued at around (pound)20 million to support Kodak Limited's role in the European supply chain operations of Eastman Kodak.

MSAS Global Logistics is acquiring 6 acres of Kodak's existing site at Swallowdale Lane, Hemel Hempstead Hemel Hempstead (hĕm`əl), town (1991 pop. 80,110), Hertfordshire, SE England. Hemel Hempstead was designated one of the new towns in 1946 to alleviate overpopulation in London. It is a market town and London suburb. , on which it will construct a new 30 metre high, 6,500 sq m fully automated and part temperature controlled warehouse. MSAS Global Logistics will also refurbish and extend an existing 4,000 sq m low bay unit. Operations are due to commence in June 2000.

The low bay unit will incorporate goods to picker technology to provide efficient and highly accurate picking of a wide range of product types. A 5000 bin mini load system will also be in operation for small and slow moving items.

A significant feature of the contract is that it will be operated on a multi-user basis. Kodak will be committed only to some 60% of the 32,000 pallet positions in the new warehouse and the balance will be filled with compatible products from the sectors that MSAS Global Logistics supports.

Jack Frost explains: "Being a multi-user facility this new operation will provide a more flexible arrangement, allowing us to respond readily to market fluctuations and providing opportunities to better manage costs."
