MSA ELECTS JOSEPH L. CALIHAN TO BOARD

 PITTSBURGH, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Mine Safety Appliances Co. (NASDAQ: MNES) (MSA) has elected Joseph L. Calihan a director.
 Calihan is a managing partner of Bradford Capital Partners, a Pittsburgh-based private investment firm.
 An expert in business development and finance, Calihan also is chairman and chief executive officer of Bradford Capital Corp., Pittsburgh, which serves as a general partner in several closely held limited partnerships. Calihan joined Bradford Capital in 1986 after 16 years with Bradford Schools, Inc., where he served as chairman and chief executive officer from 1973 to 1986. Calihan continues to serve as board chairman of Bradford Schools, which owns and operates post secondary business schools throughout the United States.
 From 1961 to 1970, Calihan worked for Mellon Bank, N.A., where he attained the position of assistant vice president, Commercial Banking Division. He is a trustee and member of the executive committee of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and serves as chairman of the hospital's annual fund drive. He also chairs the hospital's investment committee.
 Calihan is a director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Society and chairman of its nominating committee. He is also a member of the Allegheny Policy Council for Youth and Workforce Development and a board member of the Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania.
 Calihan's professional affiliations include the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), where he served as a member of the YPO International board of directors from 1985 to 1987. He is a past president of Business Education Research of America and a former member of the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools Accrediting Commission.
