Ronald Rosen, MRJ's Online Services Practice Leader, "There is a trend toward simplicity on the desktop. The promise of client/server is still there, but the complexity to manage this environment has dramatically increased. We are providing solutions to these problems, by employing Web technology to roll out more manageable applications to the desktop, and better manage the processing which takes place on the server."

Large-scale examples include Infonautics' Homework Helper and a Regional Bell Operating Company's Knowledge Analyst System

One example of MRJ's application development and integration expertise is up and running in the telecommunications industry. "Many forward-thinking service businesses have discovered that using advanced client/server technology to build dynamic, interactive online services will not only help them reduce costs, but will also help them improve the quality of customer service and greatly expand their relationship marketing capabilities so essential to competing in today's marketplace," said Rosen.

Another outstanding example of interactive capabilities provided by MRJ is Infonautics Corp.'s Homework Helper(TM), a new and widely acclaimed online research system designed for educational use and available through subscription to Prodigy. MRJ helped Infonautics engineer the Homework Helper client software as well as Infonautics' knowledge server and loading tools.

"The huge success of Homework Helper gave us a head start in recognizing the potential for online services," he noted. "There's a tremendous market out there for world-class software solutions, and the same technologies we developed for Homework Helper to make it come alive on the screen are now creating exciting new possibilities for companies in the telecommunications and financial segments."

. Rosen explained, "MRJ is well positioned to become a leading provider of Web and intranet application services. Our skills and experience working with object-oriented tools gives us the ability to enhance private and public sites using Java applets A Java program that is downloaded from the server and run from the browser. We're excited about working with Java because it provides a key missing piece of the (thin-client) architecture, by enabling the user to interact with data and by providing enhanced visualization capabilities to be done prior to executing a transaction or submitting an information request."

MRJ will implement the new services, Rosen explains, "On the data server side, we'll continue to use our large-scale database engineering capability while providing web server engineering services to such as infrastructure construction, CGI scripting, performance tuning Performance tuning is the improvement of system performance. This is typically a computer application, but the same methods can be applied to economic markets, bureaucracies or other complex systems.  and telecom integration. On the client side, our C++ experts will be Java programmers, partnering with outside creative teams to develop high-quality graphics and look and feel engineering," Rosen added, "MRJ hires the most technically proficient professionals with expertise in online services, Java, C++ and relational databases."
