``Ed never cooled down,'' UCLA coach Al Scates said. ``He got the play the whole match tonight. On some occasions, I start Ratledge and Thatcher gets to play the whole match. One of the boys usually is hot. The chances were one of them was going to get off.''

After a shaky first game, Ratledge helped the Bruins jump to early leads in the final three games to put the Bruins in position for a shot at their second NCAA title in three years.

``We just started playing as well as we can,'' Ratledge said. ``I think they pretty much played a career game that first game. I know they can play that well, but there is no way a team can play as well as they did for an entire match.''

In the first game, second-seeded Pepperdine (22-5) jumped to leads of 6-0 and 8-1 to start the match behind steady hitting from Keith Barnett, Brad Keenan and Scott Wong, who registered five kills each in the first game and a .462 hitting percentage. The Waves dropped off to .136 and .100 in the second and third games, respectively.

Pepperdine, which defeated top-seeded USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , the nation's No. 1 team, likely will join UCLA, Ohio State and Penn State in the NCAA championships when the at-large berth is announced today.

``You never know for sure, but I would be pretty surprised if we did not make it,'' Pepperdine setter Kurt Nelson said.

Pepperdine's Andre Breuer shared match-high honors with Ratledge with 27 kills. Wong and Barnett contributed 20 and 12 kills, respectively, for the Waves.

Powered by eight kills in the second game by Ratledge, the Bruins scored the final eight points in the second game to overcome an 11-7 deficit. UCLA jumped to a 6-0 lead before the Waves responded with eight unanswered points for a 8-6 lead.

In the third game, UCLA scored 12 of the final 13 points. The Bruins raced to a 8-3 lead after breaking a 3-3 tie and closed out the game with the final six points, including four in a row served by Ratledge.
