MPR Teltech and Cascade lead the way to compatible premium video services over ATM.WESTFORD,Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 1996--MPR Teltech and Cascade today announced they will work together to build system-level compatibility between MPR (MultiProtocol Router) Software from Novell that provides router capabilities for its NetWare servers. It supports IPX, IP, AppleTalk and OSI protocols as well as all the major LANs and WANs. Teltech's WAVE(TM), an ATM-based video platform, and Cascade's 500 ATM switch so that telecommunications carriers can offer seamless ATM multimedia applications in the WAN (Wide Area Network). This is an important step in ensuring compatibility of our ATM application platform with existing ATM switches, said Francis St. Pierre, marketing manager, MPR Teltech. Because Cascade is a leading contender in supplying ATM switches to carriers, it made sense to work them early on in the process. We have demonstrated WAVE on different switches and plan to work with all major ATM switch vendors to ensure compatibility. The Cascade 500 ATM switch is a scalable ATM switch capable of building large heterogeneous networks with Virtual Network Navigator topology services. Its efficient point-to-multipoint connection set-up makes it particularly suitable for video applications. MPR Teltech supplies telecommunications carriers and other service providers with the WAVE video platform that enables carriers to offer their customers premium video services. All components of the WAVE platform connect to an existing carrier ATM infrastructure of switches and network management. Components of WAVE include a video-specific Terminal that resides with the end user, giving them complete control over their calls; a Broadband Multi-site Server (BMS BMS abbr. Bachelor of Marine Science ) that has a multi-site bridging capability allowing up to eight video sites to interact in a single conference; and the Video Service Manager (VSM VSM Value Stream Mapping (manufacturing process evaluation technique) VSM Vibrating Sample Magnetometer VSM Vascular Smooth Muscle VSM Visual Studio Magazine VSM Vietnam Service Medal VSM Virtual Shared Memory VSM Viable Systems Model ), a comprehensive set of standards-based software applications that enable a service provider to offer and manage end-to-end video services as part of a complete ATM multi-media offering. Typical applications of WAVE include distance learning, videoconferencing A real time video session between two or more users or between two or more locations. Although the first videoconferencing was done with traditional analog TV and satellites, inhouse room systems became popular in the early 1980s after Compression Labs pioneered digitized video systems , telemedicine and other scientific and business applications for corporate and institutional end users. "We see the migration of ATM-based video technology to customer located equipment happening rapidly. Premium video services such as the WAVE will be a key application for our Cascade 500 ATM switch," said Chris Baldwin senior product manager, Cascade Communications Cascade Communications was a Westford, Massachusetts based manufacturer of communications equipment.
