MP: What on earth is going on.

MPS last night launched a scathing attack against North Wales' top cops, claiming they were dragging the force into a quagmire of time and money-wasting internal inquiries.

Clwyd West MP Gareth Thomas accused top brass of playing internal politics and said HM Inspectorate needed to be brought in ``to knock heads together''.

He said: ``I will be writing to the home secretary and I call on the chairman of the police authority, as a taxpayer, to explain what on earth is going on. ''

His outburst followed the revelation in the Daily Post that Peter Bolton, deputy clerk to the Police Authority, had been suspended in an investigation to discover who leaked a report about bullying allegations against deputy chief constable Bill Brereton, to the Press.

His attack was followed by a broadside from Elfyn Llwyd, Plaid Cymru MP for Meirionnydd Nant Conwy, who said: ``I am absolutely shocked this has happened. I was hoping common sense would prevail, but this behaviour exacerbates the problem.

``I am seeing signs of the public being being embarrassed by the performance of the police authority and police. The 99% of hard-working police officers are being tarred with this brush and I believe it's time to call a halt. ''
