MOVING AGAIN FARMERS MARKET VENDORS RELIEVED TO BE RELOCATING.

Byline: Naush Boghossian Staff Writer

GLENDALE - City officials are moving the weekly farmers market to a more central location in an effort to recapture recapture n. in income tax, the requirement that the taxpayer pay the amount of tax savings from past years due to accelerated depreciation or deferred capital gains upon sale of property. It runs from Griffith Park in Los Angeles east through Glendale, the Eagle Rock section of Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Arcadia, ending in Monrovia. , pedestrian traffic fell off sharply, sellers said.

Now the city is moving the market to Wilson Avenue and Orange Street in the hope of luring back the business from pedestrians and office workers they lost in the move. ``We think it will have a bigger impact in the downtown. It's too far south for the regular patrons that might be in the office buildings to go down there, grab something to eat for lunch, and to go back in the lunch hour,'' said Phil Lanzafame, interim director of development services.

``The purpose of the market was to create an ongoing event that provided some pedestrian interest and energy in the downtown. That being at the southern edge of the central business district didn't really achieve that goal.''

The farmers market will begin at its new location on Thursday and will operate there through Aug. 25, when it will return to its original site along Brand Boulevard.

Merchants said on their last day at the East Colorado site they were relieved to be moving back to a more central downtown location.

``Over there, people come for lunch and they buy. Here, they don't come for lunch,'' said John Siracusa of Virne Ranch ranch, large farm devoted chiefly to raising and breeding cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. The cattle ranch was introduced from Latin America to Texas and the plains of the W United States and Canada. , who said business dropped off by 50 percent with the move. ``Everybody's happy to move.''

Andy Jukema of Underwood Farms had one word to describe business at the interim site: ``Bad.''

``It's busier over there with street people and people from the offices,'' Jukema said. ``Nobody's shopping here.''

said although the current location is easier to access, they would have no problem following the market to its new home.

``When it was on Brand it seemed impossible to park, so you'd say forget it, but it wouldn't be a deterring factor for me,'' said Claps of North Hollywood.

The work is expected to go through November.

The popular Java City cafe closed on May 13, with store officials citing the drop-off in foot traffic - caused in large part by the street work and the removal of the farmers market - as one of the reasons for closing.

But city officials maintain they could not further delay the much-needed upgrades and they did their best to warn retailers months ago about the upcoming work.

``We know that there's some disruption disruption /dis·rup·tion/ (dis-rup´shun) a morphologic defect resulting from the extrinsic breakdown of, or interference with, a developmental process.  and that's why we developed a campaign to make people aware that all the businesses they're used to patronizing are still open in spite of this disruption,'' Lanzafame said. ``To allow your infrastructure to crumble crum·ble
