MOVIES AND MOVEMENT IN MONTPELLIER.


MONTPELLIER, France--Dance and cinema share the spotlight of Montpellier Danse 99. Montpellier's nineteenth decidedly contemporary festival fills this southern city with performances, screenings, exhibitions, and discussions from June 25 to July 10.

Movement and movies are explored with the work of artists such as the Belgian Wim Vandekeybus and his company, Ultima Vez, which performs the French premiere of In Spite of Wishing and Wanting. Set to the music of David Byrne, the piece incorporates the short film The Last Words Last words are a person's final words before death. , Jose Montalvo, will revive his international hit Paradis and present his latest piece, Le Jardin io io ito ito, two celebrations in which the music of Vivaldi unites with modern-day rap before a lively video backdrop.

The festival will be accompanied by screenings of films by featured choreographers, such as Abracadabra abracadabra (ăb'rəkədăb`rə), magical formula used by the Gnostics (see Gnosticism) to invoke the aid of benevolent spirits to ward off disease and affliction.  by French choreographer Philippe Decoufle and Chinoiseries, a short film about the meeting of French dancer Mathilde Monnier Mathilde Monnier is a French choreographer.
