Some people just have good timing.

Westlake girls' golfer Katie Deutsch certainly does -- especially when she and her parents moved back to Westlake Village from the San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. A year later, Westlake won its first league title, and repeated the next season. This year, with Deutsch as one of just two seniors, the Warriors

``She has the opportunity to be the most successful golfer we've ever had,'' coach Dave Costley said.

Costley added that consistency has played a major role in Deutsch's success.

``She's shot over 40 only one time this season,'' he said, referring to the nine-hole format. ``We can always count on her.''

Deutsch's exposure to the sport began when her mother, Michele, took older sister Liz for golf lessons at Torrey Pines Torrey Pines can refer to:

``I would always go to those lessons when I was little,'' Deutsch said. ``My mom got me some clubs just to keep me occupied.''

Liz no longer plays competitively, but Katie took the game to heart and began taking lessons from Torrey Pines golf pro Joe DeBock. She still does.

``She pours everything into it,'' DeBock said. ``When she comes back, the problem's fixed.''

The training, accompanied by a strong mental game, has shaped Deutsch into one of the best golfers in the Marmonte League and gives her a good chance to defeat Thousand Oaks' Hillary Packard in the individual finals this year.

``That's an interesting matchup,'' Costley said of the two friends. ``It seems like everybody is conceding con·cede

Deutsch is still undecided on college, but she is sure that she wants to stay in the warm climate so she can play year-round.

``I want to play golf as much as possible,'' Deutsch said. ``I'll go to whatever college gives me that opportunity.''
