TECHNOLOGY -- TOTAL OPERATORS NOW SIGNED REACHES SIX
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- It was announced today that another major international cellular operator, Argentina's CRM Movicom, has endorsed Motorola's Narrow-band Advanced Mobile Phone Service (NAMPS) with deployment set for 1992. Argentina's implementation of NAMPS, covering Buenos Aires and its surrounding cities, will benefit approximately 14 million residents.
"NAMPS technology provides us an immediate and cost effective expansion for our system," said Mauricio Wior, general manager of CRM Movicom. "With approximately 40,000 subscribers in Argentina and sustained growth projected for our business, NAMPS was the appropriate solution for us to choose."
"We are extremely pleased to add this international communications company to the growing list of cellular operators already implementing Motorola's NAMPS technology," said Jack Scanlon, corporate vice president and general manager for Motorola's Cellular Subscriber Group. "Subscribers in Argentina will now reap the many benefits offered by the innovative NAMPS technology, a cellular system that can up to triple the call capacity found in the current analog system."
The endorsement by Argentina brings the total number of NAMPS customers to six covering eight major cities. The customers include Centel Cellular; Bell Atlantic Metro Mobile; U.S. West NewVector Group; Israel's MTCCL, and Thailand's Total Access Communications. Initial Field testing of the NAMPS technology began in January 1991 with additional testing completed in Arlington Heights, Ill., headquarters of Motorola's Cellular Groups.
