 MOTOROLA REALIGNS RADIO DATA, PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS BUSINESSES
 SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) said today it is realigning some of its businesses to address the rapidly growing opportunities and customer needs in radio data and personal communications services.
 Motorola's Paging and Telepoint Systems Group will be renamed the Paging and Wireless Data Group. In addition to the present paging, component and network businesses, the group will include a new Wireless. Data Division, which is being formed from businesses currently within the Land Mobile Products Sector and Corporate Ventures. These include:
 -- The Mobile Data Division, which produces portable and mobile data systems, terminals and radio frequency modems;
 -- Wireless Enterprise Systems, which produces the Altair (TM) wireless local-area network products, as well as software tools designed to link laptop and palmtop computers to radio data networks.
 -- Data service joint ventures, such as the ARDIS joint venture with IBM.
 The Paging Group recently began offering a service called EMBARC (TM) (Electronic Mail Broadcast to a Roaming Computer). It provides one-way radio data delivery for portable computers.
 Robert L. Growney, senior vice president, will be the general manager of the new Paging and Wireless Data Group. At present, he is general manager of the Paging and Telepoint Systems Group.
 George Fisher, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Motorola is at the forefront of both voice and data wireless communications. By focusing our radio data expertise in one organization alongside Paging, we intend to become a global market leader in providing communications capabilities for portable computing."
 Motorola also is realigning its voice telephone products by moving the Telepoint Systems Division into the General Systems Sector, which now includes the cellular telephone businesses.
 Telepoint is an advanced digital cordless telephone technology that can be used in an office, at home, or outside these areas through base stations known as telepoints. It is growing rapidly in Asia, and system trials are under way in the United States, Canada and Europe.
 Telepoint Systems will be part of a newly created Personal Communications business, headed by John W. Battin, senior vice president and general manager. Battin will continue to report to Edward F. Staiano, president and general manager of the General Systems Sector. Jerry Giacomino will continue as vice president and general manager of Telepoint Systems.
 Fisher said the realignment is part of "an integrated approach to personal two-way communications. It enhances our ability to serve our customers with a full array of personal telephone products," he said.
 Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of electronic equipment, systems, components and services for worldwide markets. Products include two-way radios, pagers and telepoint systems, cellular telephones and systems, semiconductors, defense and aerospace electronics, automotive and industrial electronics, computers, data communications and information processing and handling equipment.
