MOTOROLA DISCLOSES DETAILS OF JOINT EFFORT WITH TANDEM AND LOGICA
 TO CREATE THE EMBARC SWITCH
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., June 24 -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today disclosed details of its joint effort with Tandem Computers Incorporated and Logica North America Inc. to create the EMBARC switch, the backbone for its new wireless advanced messaging system. The resulting technology enables EMBARC (Electronic Mail Broadcast To A Roaming Computer) to rapidly receive, manage and send electronic data for multi- point wireless messaging.
The switch combines Motorola's RF/paging communications expertise, Tandem's on-line transaction processing experience and Logica's message- handling software capabilities. This combination allows the switch to interconnect with public and private e-mail systems, store messages and sort and deliver wireless e-mail and information.
"Our alliance with Tandem and Logica makes EMBARC service accessible to the rapidly growing community of X.400 users and increases our capacity for handling, storing and delivering wireless electronic messages," said EMBARC's Director of Strategic Marketing Brad Davis.
"Tandem's NonStop Cyclone/R system was selected for its ability to provide EMBARC with the most up-to-date transaction processing computer available," Davis said. It controls the OSI/MHS, or Open Systems Interconnection/Message Handling System function.
The OSI is a set of international standards that enables the universal connectivity of different types of computer systems. The MHS conforms to the industry's most up-to-date recommendations for a 1988 X.400 messaging system.
"Tandem was the first company to ship X.400 messaging software that conformed to the 1988 standard," said Steve Saltwick, Global Programs Manager for Messaging. "This product, combined with Tandem NonStop systems, gives Motorola users the most reliable messaging service possible."
The Logica software, designed exclusively to the specifications of the EMBARC system, allows messages received through the X.400 gateway to be sent to the EMBARC radio transmission network and received by portable computer users as they travel in cities across the U.S. Logica also created the IBM-compatible software that enables portable computers, including the Hewlett-Packard 95LX palmtop computer, to receive and store EMBARC messages downloaded by the Motorola NewsStream receiver.
The Logica-developed software brings mobile radio and PC technology together. "Logica's capabilities in systems integration and software development and its experience in telecommunications combined to help Motorola create this leading-edge wireless messaging technology," said John Coleman of Logica North America's San Francisco office. "The value of Motorola's EMBARC is that it will enable the mobile computer user to receive information in a ready-to-use format. A user in the field will be able to receive data when they need it, and act on it immediately."
