MOTOROLA DEVELOPS COMPACT BASE STATIONS FOR CELLNET
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The European

Cellular Infrastructure Division (ECID) of Motorola (NYSE: MOT) has been awarded a multimillion-dollar contract for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of compact analog base stations for the United Kingdom cellular operator, Cellnet. The contract is part of a $56 million investment program to improve hand portable phone coverage and will initially involve the installation of more than 100 new cell sites over the next year.
The new base station concept, a joint development with Cellnet, has been designed for rapid deployment to provide localized enhancement to system capacity and coverage of Cellnet's analog cellular network. TACS and ETACS analog radio equipment, 28V power supply and ancillary equipment are installed into an insulated all-weather cabinet at Motorola's Swindon manufacturing facility. The complete unit, which has a footprint of just 16.15 square feet, is then simply transported to the site and mounted on pre-prepared concrete foundations.
Motorola's contract covers the manufacture of the radio systems, installation of the equipment within the cabinets, mast erection and aerial rigging followed by commissioning of the entire base station. The compact base station may be linked into the Cellnet network via either cables or microwave links.
The development supports Cellnet's Project ''Liberty'' consumer marketing initiative that aims to significantly reduce mobile telephony costs for the low-usage domestic customer.
Mike Tiplady, Cellnet's director of engineering operations, said, "In our continuing drive to provide unrivalled levels of service, we have developed with Motorola a versatile compact base station system which will give us high speed installation for consistently high quality coverage throughout the U.K. The initiative is a key program to support Cellnet's drive to bring mobile telephony to the general public."
"Motorola is pleased to have partnered with Cellnet on the creation of such an innovative new project," said Jack Scanlon, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group. "This new base station provides a variety of beneficial features designed to enhance the capacity and the coverage area of Cellnet's cellular network."
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular systems, infrastructure equipment and subscriber products. The company is also one of the leading providers of electronic equipment, systems, components and services for worldwide markets.
