Dell's adoption of Motorola's software modem communications technology in its award-winning Dimension series, which is designed for home users and small businesses, further increases the use of software modems to perform PC communications functions. According to market research firm VisionQuest 2000, software modems currently account for more than 60 percent of the PC modem market. Motorola's SM56 PCI II Soft Modem gives consumers cost-effective, advanced modem communication capabilities with an easy, affordable upgrade path to emerging analog modem technologies such as V.92 and V.44. It uses a silicon DAA DAA - Distributed Application Architecture: under design by Hewlett-Packard and Sun. Dell integrated Motorola's software modem technology into the popular Dimension series PCs because it provides a cost-effective option for adding communication capabilities while reducing hardware requirements. Dell expects this to result in fewer technical support calls about system communication problems, keeping company costs down and customer satisfaction up by reducing modem repair requests.

"Motorola has been one of the leaders in soft modem technology, and the Dell implementation provides further evidence of the growing reliance on this technology by PC OEMs," said Ernie Rapiere, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "Going forward, we see the expanding Internet and embedded systems market pushing soft modem demand beyond what many of us might have expected even a short time ago."

"Dell is a recognized leader in the PC industry and is once again innovating and delivering advanced technology to its customers with the adoption of soft modem technology," said Mike Tramontano, marketing director of Motorola's Software Products Division. "Our work with Dell is yet another indication that we are truly creating a valued communications platform for the PC OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  market."
