LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced a new Mobile Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) radio modem. The Motorola Mobile CDPD(TM) radio modem is the first Motorola data communications product designed for the U.S. CDPD network. The Mobile CDPD radio modem addresses the demanding requirements of specific industry segments needing cellular wireless data connections. These segments include: the transportation industry, field service, telemetry and alarm applications and utilities. Future Motorola additions to the CDPD product family will be designed to meet the specific market requirements of the portable computing industry.
Motorola, a recognized leader in mobile communications, presently provides wireless data solutions, worldwide, on both public and private radio networks, for industry, government and consumers. The Motorola Mobile CDPD radio modem extends Motorola's wireless data solutions to the rapidly developing CDPD network. The Cellular Digital Packet Data network uses packet switched technology to transmit data at a rate of 19,200 bits per second (bps) while sharing the same radio frequencies utilized by the U.S. cellular telephone network. The Motorola Cellular Subscriber Group has combined its world leadership in cellular telephone technology and experience with cellular data applications with the wireless packet switched data expertise of the Motorola Wireless Data Group to create the new Motorola CDPD radio modem.
"The cellular operators have demonstrated insight and leadership in developing and providing CDPD as a valuable data communication service for industry and individuals," said Robert N. Weisshappel, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Cellular Subscriber Group. "We applaud their efforts to increase the utilization of a scare resource, the radio spectrum. We are pleased to facilitate the rapid deployment of the CDPD network with cost effective reliable Motorola radio modems."
The Mobile CDPD radio modem provides three watts of radio-frequency (RF) power, and full duple operation. The product will be fully compliant with the CDPD system performance specifications as well as support cellular voice operation using an optional handset. The radio modem supports two API's. The first is an AT-compatible command set with built in TCP/IP, per Part 1001 of Release 1.0 of the CDPD specification, for non-TCP RS-232 devices. The second is for devices with networking software. An industry standard 9 pin RS-232 serial interface supports speeds from 300 to 19,200 bps. The airlink data rate is 19,200 bps.
The Motorola Mobile CDPD radio modem has the exclusive advantage of using the highly reliable and success ?three watt cellular telephone platform of the Motorola Cellular Subscriber Group. In addition to traditional cellular voice applications, Motorola's three watt, full duplex cellular mobile products are presently deployed in cellular data applications including package delivery trucks, offshore oil rigs, alarm applications and data monitoring applications in hostile environments.
