MOTOROLA, INC. TO PROCEED WITH NEXT PHASE OF IRIDIUM CONSORTIUM FORMATION

/REPEATING FROM YESTERDAY TO POINTS NEEDED/
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT)

announced that it has received subscriptions and letters of intent from a number of potential investors around the world and, based upon this level of interest, the company will proceed with the next phase of the initial round of financing of the Iridium consortium. Motorola said these documents, which are presently non-binding, are subject to various conditions, including approval of certain government agencies and ratification by investors.
Motorola Vice Chairman John F. Mitchell said, "We are very pleased with the worldwide interest being expressed in the Iridium program."
The company declined to identify specific investors, citing confidentiality and non-disclosure concerns.
Motorola is seeking to establish an international consortium which will own and operate the Iridium network. Motorola is developing the Iridium system and intends to become an investor in the consortium and the prime contractor of the system.
The Iridium system is a proposed $3.37 billion global telecommunications network being designed to use hand-held, wireless telephones that communicate through a constellation of 66 low-earth orbit satellites. The Iridium network intends to offer its subscribers voice, paging, facsimile, data and radiodetermination satellite services (RDSS). Current plans estimate the launching of the Iridium system constellation of satellites to begin in 1996 with commercial service anticipated in 1998.
